Recent events and updates

Thanks to all the members who came to the Chahsenah Dance in Lawton last weekend! The Hasinai Society acted as co-host and Shirley Gouge was the Head Lady Gourd Dancer.

The Oklahoma Arts Council held its statewide conference last week in Enid. Shirley Gouge and Rhonda Fair were invited to speak in the session, "Honoring the Role of Arts in Community Service." Their presentation was well-attended, and the conference was a big success.

Lots of events are coming up for the Hasinai Society. Several dates have been added to the event listings to the right. More details will be posted as they become available.

This Wednesday, 19 November 2008, the Hasinai Society will hold its weekly meeting at Shirley and Shelby's house in Anadarko. Hope to see you there!

The Hasinai Society had several floats in the American Indian Exposition parade on Monday, 4 August 2008.

Our Little Miss Hasinai Society, Shayna Howery, and her mother, Shelby.

More of our regular Haisnai members on another float.

Overall, the Hasinai Society had a good week at the fair. Along with other Caddo tribal members, they performed the Duck Dance and took 3rd place in the tribal dance competition at the fair!

Wichita Annual Dance

This Thursday, 14 August 2008, is the beginning of the Wichita Annual Dance. It will be a very special night for two of our Hasinai members. Trace and Thomas Totherow will make their official entry into the arena at that evening's dance. Please come out and support these two members of our organization, as well as their parents, Virginia and Jason!

Photos from Caddo Camp 2008

Here's some photos from camp that Tracy Newkumet sent our way. These were taken at the dance at the end of camp. Thanks, Tracy!

The last part of the Turkey Dance.

More of the Turkey Dance. That's Morgan, the flute instructor, dancing with the Hasinai Princess Naomie Paddlety.

Some of our lovely ladies taking a break after the Turkey Dance.

The Duck Dance, one of the evening's social dances.

Another shot of the Duck Dance, which Tracy has labeled for us.

Needless to say, the dance was a lot of fun and a great way to end the week of camp!

4 August 2008: Indian Fair parade

The Hasinai Society will participate in the 2008 American Indian Exposition parade on Monday, 4 August. The parade starts at 10 AM, so we'll need to line up before that. Bring your swimsuits, because after the parade, there's a pool party at Shirley's house! If you have any questions, call Shirley at 405.656.2344.

Oklahoma Statewide Arts Conference

The Oklahoma Arts Council has invited the Hasinai Society to participate in its first annual arts conference in over 30 years. The conference, Arts at the Crossroads, will be held in Enid on November 12 - 14, 2008.

Shirley and Rhonda will take part in a conference panel on Thursday. The panel's topic is honoring the role of arts in commuity service. The Hasinai Society's Summer Youth camp was selected as a model program by the arts council, and Shirley and Rhonda will share information about the camp and the assistance that the Oklahoma Arts Council provides.

More on the conference can be found here.

2 August 2008: Alice's powwow

Alice Barrientez, our wonderful beadwork instructor at Caddo camp, is organizing the Ft. Worth Independent School District's 1st Annual Indian Student Powwow. Try to make it to Ft. Worth to show your support for Alice and the important work she's doing for our Native youth! Jared and Candis are both on the head staff, and hopefully a lot of the Hasinai campers from the DFW area will be able to make it.

The details: The dance is Saturday, 2 August 2008 from 9 AM until 10 PM. It will be at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center (5201 C.A. Roberson Blvd., Ft. Worth). For more information, contact Alice at Alice.barrientez@fwisd.org or 817.871.2343.
